A teenager in Guinea who was sentenced to prison for cheating on a national exam has died in custody, reportedly due to complications from sickle cell disease. The case has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny of the country’s harsh penal system and its treatment of minors and individuals with chronic health conditions.

The 16-year-old, identified in local reports as Alpha Oumar Diallo, was arrested in June 2024 after being caught using a mobile phone during the Baccalaureate exam, a high-stakes test that determines university admission. Under Guinea’s strict anti-cheating laws, he was convicted and sentenced to one year in prison. According to human rights groups, Diallo had been held in a crowded detention facility in the capital, Conakry, where conditions are known to be unsanitary and medical care is severely limited.

Diallo’s family and lawyers have stated that he suffered from sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder that causes severe pain, anemia, and increased vulnerability to infections. They claim that prison authorities were aware of his condition but failed to provide adequate treatment or transfer him to a hospital when his health deteriorated. He died on July 28, 2024, just weeks into his sentence.

The incident has ignited a national debate about the proportionality of Guinea’s anti-cheating laws. Amnesty International and other global human rights organizations have called for the immediate release of all minors imprisoned for exam-related offenses and for a review of Guinea’s juvenile justice system. They argue that education should not be criminalized and that alternative measures, such as community service or counseling, would be more appropriate for youthful offenders.

For Diallo’s family, the loss is immeasurable. His mother, speaking to local media, described him as a bright and ambitious student who dreamed of becoming a doctor. “He made a mistake, but he didn’t deserve to die for it,” she said. “The system failed him.”
